about

Lichen, the new vehicle for South London-based songwriter Michael Clark, today unveil the serene and sparsely layered new single Light on the Firing Line. Led by Michael Clark's haunting vocals, the track, a reflection on dealing with grief, appears in episode two of Shane Meadows’ latest TV show, The Gallows Pole.

“I wrote Light on the Firing Line in London during the first lockdown.” explains Michel. “The lyrical themes are mainly about dealing with periods of loss, grief and regret whilst still trying to find inspiration and guidance from somewhere. I didn’t realise this when writing the song but looking back over the lyrics it’s seems quite pertinent considering the time it was written.”

Following on from last year’s Never Felt the Morning Sun, released to coincide with Lichen’s appearance at End of the Road, and in between a busy period playing guitar for the Golden Dregs, Michael has been heading into the studio working on a new set of tracks with musician and producer Ted Barnes.

“This track came into its own when I started working on it with one of my old friends and producer Ted Barnes who really brought it to life, adding different layers of instrumentation whilst still managing to keep it sparse and intimate sounding.”

Light on the Firing Line is the first to come from these sessions and offers a first glimpse into the next chapter of Lichen’s work.
